Dave Ferris
Pianist / Composer

BIOGRAPHY:

Dave Ferris has been a musician all his life. Originally from St. Louis, MO, he spent his early years studying the piano and by 7th grade he was playing in a rock band and eventually found his home in jazz in his early teens. "I've always played in bands. In St. Louis, I learned to play with people, and listen. That seemed to be the most important aspect of playing in a group".

Dave's early influences were Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett. He gigged for several years with one of St. Louis' top quartets, which featured the Gateway Arch City's noted saxman Freddie Washington. A few years later he was a member of the jazz/fusion band, Full Moon Consort signed to Epic Records. The band opened for groups like Pat Metheny. Poco. Todd Rundgren,
Jethro Tull and the Allman Brothers Band.

In 1979 Dave moved to California and discovered two excellent teachers vibest-Charlie Shoemake.and pianist, Terry Trotter of whom he credits with having put him on the right path, changing his outlook on music while giving him a solid jazz harmonic foundation. Ferris still practices the music of such composers as Bach and Chopin, and has found that his devotion to the classics and his love of jazz are interwoven.

Dave recorded his debut CD, "The Quiet One" as a leader, arranger and composer at Chick Corea's Mad Hatter Studios in 1991. There are eleven solid tunes, well-written and covering a range of styles from straight-ahead grooves to more expressionistic modes. The musicians on the CD are stellar in their own right including Bob Sheppard, Kendall Kay, Howie Shear and Eric Von Essen.

Dave makes his living playing venues, gigs, studio work, clinics, and teaching. He has worked with a diverse variety of singers and musicians including Al Jarreau, Sheila Jordan, Patti Lupone, Linda Ronstadt, Larry Carlton, John Pattitucci, Supersax, Louie Bellson, Scott Colley, Bill Hollman Big Band, Doc Severenson Big Band, Vinnie Golia, Jack Sheldon, Carl Anderson, Tierney Sutton and many more. He currently resides in the LA area as an active member of the music community and continues to compose and arrange.
